Zuzana Valla

Zuzana came across photography almost by accident in her late twenties, and in the few years since that time, it has transformed her life. Her grandfather was a keen amateur photographer, shooting in black and white, and growing up she always enjoyed his pictures, without knowing it would one day become her passion. Her grandmother also created colour paintings from his photos, which Zuzana helped her with as a child. Yet despite this early introduction to photography, Zuzana thought of it as something she admired in other people’s work, never thinking that one day she would follow in her grandparents’ footsteps.

For most of her young adult life, Zuzana enjoyed taking pictures of everyday moments using a mobile phone. Because she couldn’t find a phone with good quality at that time, she decided to buy a camera and from that day, her 29th birthday, she was born again. For the first month she felt intimidated by the camera and its complex functions, so she hid it under her bed, only sometimes taking it out to open the box, look at it, and put it away again. Luckily her house mate, also a photographer, pushed her to try. So she began, and since then she has never stopped. From that day photography has taken over her life. She thinks about it all the time, and is continually finding new inspiration all around her. Often this comes from the people she meets through her daily life, many of whom have become models for her.

Zuzana’s personality is reflected in the subdued, subtle and tender atmosphere of her favourite pictures. She wants to celebrate womanhood and the less obvious aspects of feminine beauty, the calm between the smiles. She has a special fascination with photographing the female back, allowing the posture and body language to tell its own story. In her pictures, the face is often unseen or only partially visible, meaning the observer can only guess the mood of the subject. She likes catching the atmosphere of a moment which will never happen again, where beauty and softness meets pain and sadness.

Zuzana’s work is gaining an increasing audience both online and in physical galleries, and she is keen to keep growing and developing her craft in the years to come. She aims to be published regularly in quality magazines, while continuing her own personal creative projects.
